System Requirements
The performance of xLswitch directly depends on CPU speed. In our lab we are achieving forwarding speed of up 7000 short packets/sec on
Pentium-III 550Mhz systems. If you are going to utilize xLswitch's L7 features, and the performance is critical, you will probably need the
fastest CPU and memory you can get. The amount of available RAM is proportional to the number of simultaneous network connections that
xLswitch can handle.
Minimal Requirements
- CPU: Intel Pentium II 266Mhz or higher
- RAM: 128MB RAM, at least 256MB is recommended
- Disk Space: 1GB, including ASPLinux distribution
- CD-ROM drive (for install)
- Network card (see the recommended list below)
- Linux 2.4 kernel
- RPM4-based Linux distribution (ASPLinux 7.1 is included)
GUI tools for xLswitch administration could be installed on Linux or Windows 9x/2000 networked workstation, 16-32MB of free memory is recommended. Linux should have X Window configured. xLswitch could be fully configured from command line, but we do not recommend this until you are really familiar with xLswitch internals.
Recommended Network Cards
The peak performance of xLswitch is limited by the performance of the network card installed in your
computer. While Linux kernel has support for practically all the network cards currently in production, not all cards are equal. xLswitch can
benefit greatly from hardware checksumming that is supported on some cards. We recommend the following cards for use with xLswitch:
- 3com 3C905B
- 3com 3C985B
- Alteon AceNIC
- Adaptec DuraLAN
- Intel EtherExpress Pro/100
- Intel EtherExpress Pro/1000
- NetGear GA620
