RULES FOR THE SUSPENSION OR CANCELLATION OF A DOMAIN NAME

Under its published Rules, Nominet has the power to suspend or cancel a Domain Name registration in certain specific circumstances. However, Nominet rarely invokes these powers. The most frequent invocation is where legal action has been commenced.

The rules state that Nominet may cancel or suspend a Domain Name in any one of the following circumstances:

  • If the Domain Name is administered in a way likely to endanger the operation of the Domain Name System

  • If the basis on which the Domain Name was registered has changed (eg the organisation making the application no longer exists)

  • If it is drawn to Nominet's attention that the Domain Name is being used in a manner likely to cause confusion to Internet users

  • Where Nominet has been informed that legal action has been commenced regarding use of the Domain name

  • Where Nominet is of the opinion that one of the above events is likely to occur.
