How to use WHOIS

Top Level Domains (TLD's)

The Top Level Domain (TLD) part of the Domain Name appears right at the end of the Domain Name, such as bbc.co.uk Most geographical territories have been allocated a specific two-letter code, like .uk, which is called a country code Top Level Domain. There are also several TLD's that are not specific to a geographical location - these are known as generic Top Level Domains such as .com.

Organisations usually select a Top Level Domain that corresponds to the country in which they are operating, and some companies choose to register Domain Names in several different TLD's. In general, businesses based in or wishing to market themselves in the UK use a Domain Name ending .uk.

Nominet UK manages the Registry for Domain Names in the .uk TLD only - click here for more information about other Registries.
