Honours

Awarded the Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.) in January 1994 by her Majesty the Queen for services to industry, particularly in the field of trade marks.

Granted the AIPPI Award of Merit in 1996.

International Trade Mark Consultant working, inter alia, for -

1. Gevers & Partners, an international patent and trade mark firm with its main office in Brussels and Antwerp specialising in European Community trade mark work.

2. Private clients in the UK and USA.

3. The World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) as a panellist for resolving domain name disputes under ICANN's Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy.

1994/1995

Part time for WIPO, working to promote membership of the Madrid Protocol, an international trade mark registration treaty. Also, on occasions, I undertook missions on behalf of WIPO to underdeveloped and developing countries to promote the knowledge and use of intellectual property.

Imperial Chemical Industries plc, a multinational chemical and pharmaceutical company.

Head of the ICI Group Trade Marks Department from 1981-1994.

1960-1970

Trade Marks Officer of The Wellcome Foundation Limited, a pharmaceutical company.

Other Activities

Secretary to the Pharmaceutical Trade Marks Group (which I helped to found) from 1970-1983.

1978-1985 Justice of the Peace, sitting in the Inner London Juvenile Court.

Council Member of the Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys from 1982-1988 and 1995-1999, and sometime Chairman of its Law Committee. The Institute represents all trade mark attorneys in the UK.

President of the Trade Marks Patents and Designs Federation from 1989-1991. This organisation has some 80 members in industry and its primary function is to protect and promote all branches of intellectual property (patents, trade marks, industrial designs etc.) on behalf of British industry, as well as to lobby the European Commission in Brussels, other Governments around the world, and inter-governmental organisations.

Director of the International Trademark Association (formerly the United States Trademark Association) from 1984-1987 and 1992-1994.

Chairman of the Trade Marks Working Group of UNICE (Union des Confédérations de l'Industrie et des Employeurs d'Europe)from 1992-1995.

President of the European Communities Trade Mark Association from 1994-1996. ECTA was formed in 1980 to bring together all those persons whether in industry or private practice in the fields of trade marks or designs in the European Community. The Association now has approximately 1600 members in over 50 countries.

AIPPI (International Association for the Protection of Industrial Property)

1. Chairman of Question 88 on the "International Registration of Marks".

2. Former Council member of the British Group.

3. Granted the prestigious AIPPI Award of Merit in 1996.

Council member of the London based Intellectual Property Institute.

1998-2000 Vice President (representing ECTA) on the Intellectual Property Constituency of the Domain Name Supporting Organisation of ICANN (the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) which is the ultimate authority over the Internet.

Co-editor of "ECTA Guide to EU Trade Mark Legislation", published by Sweet & Maxwell in 1998.
